Hi Rich--I'm glad you stopped by. I love your quote about needing to go through the wilderness to get to the treasure. That's something I try to remember all the time, although it's harder when I'm in the wilderness. Much easier when I've reached the treasure and I'm looking back on how I got there. :-)

Hi Rich,
This post really resonates with me.

The best leaders, in my view, are "whole persons," who bring both their giftedness and their brokenness to the organization they are part of.

See my blog entries on this:

http://learningvoyager.blogspot.com/2005/06/nine-steps-to-successful-organization_12.html

and

http://learningvoyager.blogspot.com/2006/04/leadership-requires-whole-person-heart.html

(BTW: I was following this topic on ODNet, then noticed via Bloglines, that you are continuing it here at 7 paths blog. I sometimes do the same thing, starting at ODNet, then shifting to my blog, Here We Are. Now What?)

Great post.

Regards,

Terry

Actually these are comments e-mailed to me by two folks who responded to my invitation to in the 7 Paths e-letter comment on dangerous leaders. Here they are:

I believe someone becomes a dangerous leader when they and they alone start to take ownership of theorganization they are leading. Such as a new church building that has been erected and the leader of the project has spent countless hours working, managing, troubleshooting, meetings, missing his own work and family obligations due to the project. Even tho others have contributed and it is not his building, He has a connection to the project that makes him think he owns the place and treats everyone like they cannot even move in the building witghout his permission.

Ginny Turner

DANGER SIGNS: I knew a leader once who only talked about her problems/struggles AFTER she had overcome them (or had she?). Safe leaders let their followers in on their own struggles; they ask their followers for help, for prayer, for support. I think this does at least two things:

1. It empowers followers

2. It lets the ogranization know that struggle is normal; there is no such thing as Superman, so lets get down to the business of helping each other.

I can't think of any example in the gospels of Jesus hiding his human frailty from his disciples - he asked them to pray with him, to help in the work of ministry, to go into town to get food for him (how tired he must have been at Jacob's well!) - and in the end his humanity was dispayed to the whole world when he died.

Aaron Fleming

As a self proclaimed opinionated individual, I have often struggled with the 'fact' that my opinions are right and important. In retrospect, I have found that there MAY have been room for other views that may have been contradictory to my own. I didn't like it...wasn't comfortable with it...but learned to accept it. As my mom pointed out to me about a million times when I was growing up (and a few times since I've crested the wave of adulthood), "Just because you're the loudest doesn't mean you're the rightest!" Don't tell her- but she's right! So I've learned (not with 100% accuracy) to quiet myself and accept the fact that others are entitled to their opinions, and I, in turn, am entitled not to agree. It has made my life and my household much more peaceful.
Thank you too Rich for pointing me to Anne Lamott. You were right on target with the fact that she is my new writing hero! How perceptive of you!
Blessings!
Lori Gray
